City of Chesterfield & Parkway Schools to Host the 23rd Annual Earth Day Festival

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

April 14, 2014

City of Chesterfield & Parkway Schools to Host the 23rd Annual Earth Day Festival.

The West County Earth Day Festival is one of the region’s largest Earth Day events with entertainment, recycling and eco-friendly products available!  The Chesterfield Citizens Committee for the Environment, in partnership with the Parkway School District, will host the West County Earth Day Festival on Saturday, April 26 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm at Parkway West High School, located at 14653 Clayton Road. This is a FREE community event for all ages to enjoy!

The festival has moved indoors this year so participants can enjoy visiting with informational exhibitors and vendors selling up-cycled and recycled art and craft items.  Over 500 sapling trees and native plants will be given away, as in previous years, and nearly anything that can be recycled will be collected at the drive-thru recycling area.   Kids can make projects from recycled materials with Chesterfield Arts and the St. Louis Teacher’s Recycle Center-Van Go!

Operation Food Search will be collecting food and personal care items.  Please bring unexpired food items and unopened/unused personal care items.  The 2nd Annual Science Fair Competition will host kids from around the area competing in projects that are related to sustaining or improving the quality of our environment.   Food trucks from Bombay Food Junkies, Zia’s Slice of the Hill and Russo’s will be there with delicious food offerings as well.
The popular recycling drive-thru area is free to the public. The following items will be collected:

  • Musical instruments (Music for Lifelong Achievement)
  • Bicycles (St. Louis Bicycle Works)
  • Single stream recyclables such as glass, plastic, paper, and aluminum (Republic Services)
  • Cardboard (Republic Services)
  • Electronics, TVs, computers, and small appliances (MRC)
  • Used clothing, linens, and paired shoes (Remains, Inc.)
  • Tool batteries & CFL light bulbs  (Home Depot)
  • New and used building materials (Habitat for Humanity)
  • Buttons, beads, board games, and children’s books (St. Louis Teacher’s Recycle Center)
  • Fabric and sewing notions (Charity Sharity)

Free confidential document shredding will be provided by Cintas (five-box limit).  The Citizens Alliance for Positive Youth (CAPY) and the Chesterfield Police Department will be collecting prescription and over-the-counter medications, inhalers, ointments and patches.

Homeowners who are interested in starting a native garden to restore the habitat for pollinators, birds, and butterflies can register for Chesterfield’s Native Gardening Grow-Off competition.  Participants who sign up at Earth Day will receive a Native Gardening Starter Kit, consisting of five native plants from Grow Native plus planting and educational information.
