The Chesterfield Police Department offers free car seat installations by a certified child passenger safety technician.
This service provides citizens with the opportunity to have their child safety seats installed in their vehicles by specially trained police officers. The service also allows citizens to have their existing car seats checked for proper installation. The service is offered free of charge for citizens and is done by appointment. Citizens interested in scheduling an appointment should contact Officer Chad Meyer at 636.537.6769 , email at cmeyer@chesterfield.mo.us, or Officer Michael Clymer at 636-537-6784, email at mclymer@chesterfield.mo.us
The Facts
Car crashes kill more children between the ages of 1 and 14 than any other cause. Properly installed, safety seats reduce the risk of death for young children by about 55-70%. The laws regarding child safety seats have recently changed, the guidelines to follow are:
- Children who are under age 4 or who weigh less than 40 pounds must be secured in an appropriate child safety seat.
- Children age 4 through 7 who weigh at least 40 pounds must be in an appropriate child safety seat or booster seat unless they are 80 pounds or 4'9" tall.
- Children age 8 and older who weigh at least 80 pounds or are at least 4'9" are required to be secured by a safety belt or booster seat appropriate for that child.
